Visual Effects

Course Description:
The primary focus of the class is the creation of digital special effects. The curriculum will include basic techniques of video editing, compositing, and 2D animation 2D and 3D visual Effects. The class toolset is: After Effects, Houdini, and Maya.

Objectives:

2D and 3D Effects
Including particle generation, filters, shaders, and other techniques

Compositing
Composition of final film in the production pipeline process, construction of a final shot using video, render layers, and other art

Composition
The basics of Camera, layout, and framing

Keying
Color keying of green/blue screens, controlling color spill, various mask construction techniques such as animated and rotto-scope

Color Correction
Color grading and correction on the layer and mask level

Policies: Back-up
Be sure to always back-up your files on a regular basis. Unfinished or lost projects due to data loss, or mismanagement will not be accepted.

There is no extra credit offered in this course.

3 unexcused absences will result in a failing grade.

The work you do will be assets prior to grading using feedback.

Once feedback has been given students my revise their work prior to grading. After grading no further feedback will be given.

Policies: Assessment
Students will meet with instructor to discuss work and grades one on one at midterm, and 2 week prior to final. This is the only time grades will be discussed, unless requested by the student.

Objective : Measurable advancement, without bias or opinion: 50% of grade

Subjective : Based on the industry and instructor knowledge and opinions: 50% of grade

Policies: Assignments*

Students will be given two assignments for the class, a midterm and final. Both will be graded with the student demonstrating milestone completion. Students will complete a 2 min demo reel for the midterm of their work, and a one minute demo of their work for the final.


Policies: Milestones*
Students will complete a minimum of ten milestones for the midterm and the final. Twenty total. Students must have each milestone approved, and completed to move on to the next milestone.

*All work must be submitted on time. Each project will be graded using the stated grading criteria.
